Data Design works in a world of electronics driven by software. While our focus is on designing and manufacturing the best hardware possible, in most cases that would not be possible without the best software support possible. A team of talented programmers specializing in embedded and instrument software design is available for this purpose.

The company does not attempt to enter the customer’s area of expertise, which is typically application software or system integration. However, we do offer a flying head start with open source solutions for hardware drivers, libraries, and sample code. Embedded computing systems often include a full Linux operating system running from flash memory on delivery, along with all of the necessary tools and software components for immediate productivity in developing applications. Instrument systems are provided with basic functionality available out of the box, leaving no doubt about the application potential or the path to application success.

Open source software for instrument designs allows for rapid adaptation to unique applications. Additionally, for all hardware requiring software support, advanced software designs can be derived from an ever growing library of software source code available at Data Design.

Layered Software Design

Software requirements are carefully
defined for each project. A layered approach is taken in order to make
source code reusable across multiple hardware platforms.

Often times Data Design is charged with developing strong hardware level support for use in customer application development. A layered approach provides exactly the interfaces required without making unnecessary application level
design commitments.

Where an operating system is required, Windows and Linux are supported directly. For simpler systems a complete run time package is developed and documented.

Embedded Linux kernels make computer modules into turnkey development platforms. Most of the computer modules Data Design manufactures contain a Linux operating system. Data Design provides the user with Linux drivers for all hardware peripherals on the module.

Software designs are generally intended to be portable to other operating systems. Data Design works with third parties to maintain platform compatibility. For example, a significant level of support exists for LabView and LabView RT.
